W&A Gilbey Co. was established in 1857 in a basement cellar located in London at the intersection of Oxford Street and Berwick. The company was a wine and spirits dealer that had grown to include Edinburgh, Belfast, and Dublin by the turn of the century.
It also had one of the largest inventorys of whiskey that was maturing. Gilbeys started offering Redbreast, a 12-year-old whiskey, for sale in 1912. The chairman of Gilberys, a keen ornithologist, is credited with coming up with the name, which was a reference to a particular kind of bird called the Robin Redbreast.
