Rock Hill Farms Bourbon – Single Barrel Bourbon
In order to meet the demands of their expansive society, the ancient Egyptians started using wooden barrels to store and transport liquids in 2690 B.C. During the Early Dynastic Period, they started substituting wooden casks for clay jars. The benefits of using wooden barrels were clear: they were less brittle than clay ones, and because of their cylindrical shape, they could be rolled instead than carried over short distances. However, barrels fashioned from wooden staves were highly porous, as dwellers along the Nile soon discovered; any liquids contained in the barrel gradually evaporated as the barrel “breathed.”
Whiskey evaporates through the wood’s pores as it ages in oak casks. The angel’s share is the term used to describe the 2% of aged whiskey that is typically lost to evaporation annually. According to federal regulations in the United States, bourbon must be matured in brand-new, charred oak casks and be brewed from a mashbill that contains at least 51% maize. Straight bourbon can be defined as bourbon that satisfies these standards and has been matured for at least two years.
At a strong 100 proof, each bottle of Rock Hill Farms Bourbon is bottled in bond after being matured for about 8 years in a single, brand-new, charred American oak barrel. The sweet aromas of toasted nuts, fruit, chocolate, and marshmallow are complemented by a hint of spice in Rock Hill Farms Bourbon, which is made from a mash bill of corn and malted barley and contains more rye than other bourbons. The bourbon has a persistent sweetness and a very smooth aftertaste.
Washingtonian Magazine named Rock Hill Farms whiskey “The World’s Greatest Bourbon” because of the rich farmland along the Kentucky River that passes outside the distillery in Frankfurt where the whiskey is created. Furthermore, Rock Hill Farms Bourbon received 96–100 points from Wine Enthusiast and 95 points from Jim Murray in Whisky Magazine.
